The River at Green Knowe

The River at Green Knowe

Author: L.M. Boston
Narrator: Simon Vance

"Outstanding and imaginative."-- School Library Journal A beautifully written story [in which] the everyday becomes magical and the magical becomes believable." -- Chicago Tribune A dull summer holiday? Hardly. But then, Green Knowe is like no other place on earth. There is as much magic here as there are rooms and gardens to explore, and that magic extends even to the river that flows past the manor. While visiting Green Knowe for the summer, Ping, Ida, and Oskar find an old canoe and set out upon the water. They have no idea that they are rowing into other worlds entirely --places where giants recline on the shore, and horses have wings, and a simple paddle downriver becomes a journey into a land of enchantment. This will be one summer the children will never forget! Lucy Maria Boston (1892-1990) purchased a ramshackle manor house near Cambridge, England, in 1935, which she lovingly restored over a period of two years. It is the house that inspired her, at the age of sixty-two, to take pen in hand and create the beloved Green Knowe chronicles. L.M. Boston said she wrote her books to please herself -- but the pleasure of her stories extends to all who read them. Simon Vance is a native of Brighton, England. After graduating from the Brighton School of Music and Drama, and Leeds University, Vance embarked on a lengthy career with the BBC, in addition to narrating for the Talking Book Service of the Royal National Institute for the Blind. Later, he moved his residence and narrating career to California. His work has received five AudioFile 'Earphone' awards and three 'Audie' nominations.
