Lucy Troyer is traveling by train to Middlefield, Ohio, to care for her cousin Mattie, who was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Lucy is fond of Mattie, plus she’s nursing a broken heart. The man she courted for two years just became engaged to her best friend. Calvin Weaver is on his way home from attending a horse auction. He’s used to being catered to, since his family owns quite a bit of land in Middlefield, his great grandfather founded the town, and Calvin is handsome and outgoing—good marriage material. When their train breaks down, Calvin and Lucy, the only two Amish people onboard, band together for the night. Calvin is taken aback by Lucy’s independence and lack of interest in him, and once in Middlefield, Lucy is busy caring for Mattie, and Calvin is busy helping run the town. But neither can fully forget the bond forged on the train.
