In Vietnam in 1968-69, a young Marine has ambitions to command a company, but two people stand in his way: a well-loved, combat-weary lieutenant and an angry young leader of the company's radical blacks. As the young lieutenant experiences the cost of combat, he begins to see the terrible results of his ambition.
