Dunbar Out Loud

Author: Paul Laurence Dunbar
Narrator: Bobby Norfolk

Paul Laurence Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1872, to parents who were both former slaves. From this humble and impoverished background, he went on to achieve international recognition for his work, which he alternately rendered in African American dialect and in standard English. His work was popular with both black and white readers. Though he died of tuberculosis at the age of 33, his output was prolific. Before his death, he published twelve poetry collections, four short story collections, one play, and five novels. As a stand-up comic, Bobby Norfolk has opened shows for Roberta Flack, B.B. King, and Lou Rawls. For his work as a storyteller, he holds three Emmy Awards, five Parent's Choice Awards, and two Parent's Guide to Children's Media Awards. With his wife, Sherry, Norfolk is co-author of the book The Moral of the Story: Folktales for Character Development. Norfolk currently serves on the board of the National Storytelling Network and lives in St. Louis and Atlanta. 1. Introduction (1:23) 2. The Party (7:26) 3. Little Brown Baby (2:27) 4.
